Annual UCEA Legislative Dinner is a Success! On March 21st, UCEA hosted it's annual Legislative Dinner at the Westwood in Garwood. Almost 200 educational employees from Union County attended the dinner to hear from NJEA executives and our State Legislators. Our President, Herb Levitt, stressed the importance of continuing our attention on the voting habits of those who represent us in the State House in Trenton. Legislators in attendance included: Assemblypersons Jon Bramnick, Neil Cohen, Joe Cryan, Jerry Green, Dr. Eric Munoz, and William Payne. The legislators addressed many issues during the program. They reported on the impact of NJEA's mobilization efforts concerning issues important to our members. The post cards, phone calls, and e-mails from our members have been reaching our legislators, and they are responding. This is an example of democracy in action. We also heard from Joyce Powell our NJEA President. Joyce discussed the negotiations held between key NJEA personnel and Governor Corzine. As a result of these negotiations, our association members will have to keep our eyes on the NJ Legislature because the only way these progressive ideas will be enacted is through legislation. Last year our members sent over 69,000 e-mails and made an unknown number of phone calls. Joyce Powell said we will have to keep up the pressure this year if we want to get legislation passed to help our schools and secure our pension and benefits for ourselves and future members. |

On March 2, 2007, UCEA again sponsored an exciting Read Across America celebration coordinated by Colette Bapst. This year we were able to have programs at The Barnes & Noble stores in Clark (under the direction of Collette Bapst) and Springfield (under the direction of Debbie Bearg). As opposed to the ice and snow storm that attacked us on March 2nd of last year, this year the weather was beautiful! Many children and their parents enjoyed the event. Activities included face painting, games, coloring, and some great book reading by our members, retired members and even a few future members from Kean University. UCEA provided each child with a goodie bag and purchased $800.00 worth of books that were raffled off at both stores. There also were activity sheets and refreshments. The children and the volunteers had a wonderful time! |
